My Art Blog
Using John Derry's New Watercolour Brushes in Corel Painter 11John Derry's New Digital Watercolour Brushes: I bought John Derry's New Digital Watercolour Brushes through his blog the other day. There is a link to it in my blogroll. My first impressions are very favourable. I was struck by his comments in the video's that came with them that he doesn't come at this from the point of view of a traditional watercolourist. He closely studied the 'visual language' of traditional watercolour and set about designing custom watercolours to emulate these kinds of brush marks. This is the purpose of my own study of traditional watercolours. I have derived my own methods of using the digital watercolour and watercolour brushes in conjunction with airbrushes, and blenders (for the most part...I do use a Glow Brush, a Burn and a Dodge a little bit too!) Lately, I have been experimenting with the Liquid Ink brushes as well, to get various random blobs and spots and spatters. Recent posts demonstrate these new techniques.
I would like to point out here, that I do not use filters, or cloning techniques to do my watercolours. They are quite literally painted on a blank canvas brush stroke, by brush stroke, the same way a traditional watercolourist would work. There are many programs and ways to produce a 'watercolour look' to photo's. I am not using these methods at all because I don't believe they are digital painting in the true sense of the word. Do traditional artists buy canvasses with images already on them and then alter these images and call the result an original painting? I hardly think so! Maybe they could call them 'pre-mixed media' eh! lol! Don't forget you heard this term here first, I just made it up! It is kind of snotty, but I don't think 'digital art' (a term I'm beginning to hate), will ever be considered fine art as long as the definitions of digital art and digital painting remain so unclear. I like John Derry's point that the digital tools are just that, more tools in an artist's arsenal. Plan to write some more about the brushes themselves in the next few days! Have a wedding to go to, my nephew David is marrrying Brandy! Whoo-woo! We've had a little spate of weddings in our big family in the past year and a bit. I'm doing some art marketing this afternoon and don't have time to review John Derry's New Digital Watercolour Brushes right now. I will say I am very excited about them. They seem to be just what I need in my watercolour repretoire!
