Two Hellebores for a Fine Photographer
NOTE: First posted Feb 16, 2009 on my wordpress blog. These two paintings of Helleboris are from beautiful photo references by Teunis Haveman. I found them on Webshots and emailed him to request permission to use his photo's as references for my paintings. He obviously gave me the go ahead. I think it's so cool to be able to look at photo's and other art from around the world and contact the artists. I called the one on the right "Dip Anyone?" because the petals look like potato chips the way I've painted them! Never mind ... what on earth is that flower in? It looks like a toilet paper roll! Just checking to see if you are all awake out there! Actually, I kind of like the end result, it has an abstract quality to it that I would like to experiment more with, in another painting. I'm making fun of my painting not Teunis' photo which is beautiful (or I wouldn't have wanted to paint it.)
I have printed them and will be mailing them to him in Holland. I was worried they were going to be too dark printed on the Aurora Fine Art Paper, but reducing the Dye Concentration before printing resulted in a good balance. Still lost some detail, even printed at 600 dpi. I've been trying to paint really clearly and cleanly to see if it improves the quality of my print outs. My conclusion is that it does help, even though I was a pretty neat and tidy painter before that. Someday I'm going to get wild and loose!! Can't think what to paint next! Probably more Still Life, maybe with flowers? Probably should do some housework before I get engrossed again! Still have a candle to paint for a friend ... can't figure out what to put with it. It's for her bathroom, so fruit is out. Update: Aug. 24, 2009 These two paintings were popular at my art fair experience. I noticed that younger people liked the drama of these. My daughter Adrienne who is 24 years old confirmed this.
