Trying Out Some New Digital Watercolour Brushes created by Skip Allen

Skip Allen who teaches at Digital Art Academy has created yet another set of marvelous watercolour and digital watercolour brushes. He has really outdone himself with this set. It's called Splashing Water and will be available through the Holiday Open Studio session starting at DAA on November 20th.

I'm very fortunate to have Skip for a friend, he teaches me lots of things and lets me try out his brush sets. The new brushes have a much wetter, yet more subtle paint application. You would swear your Intuos pen is going to drip. I haven't had the chance to just paint and experiment with new brushes and techniques for quite awhile because I've been working so hard on my book.

My first article in Digital Paint Magazine will be published very soon. I am excited about it, but am a little nervous too. I hope other digital artists will find it interesting and helpful even if they don't paint with the same style. My first article is a full tutorial still life of apples using primarily the digital watercolour variants. Some of my custom brush variants are included in the article. They are called "Joan's Apple Set" (what else lol!)

I painted Snow Study One using these brushes and I've only begun to be a bit familiar with all their particlular characteristics and all the many possible variations. Some great watercolour brushes for grainy wet looking washes and the ability to mix the colours in a more wet into wet way is one of the most important things these brushes are capable of. The new digital variants seem a little odd when you first try to use them, but the blendability and variations for soft and hard edges and fringe control is so amazing. Like using wet media. I LOVE these brushes!

Dear Joan,

You are the sweetest friend. I appreciate you using the brushes and giving me feedback. I love seeing the work you are doing. I cannot begin to handle the brushes as well as you do. Which, reinforces the fact that it isn't the brushes but the artist handling the brush. You are a master. I am excited about your first article in Digital Paint Magazine. I know everyone will love it.

BTW, your blog is one of the best educational blogs around. You rock.
