Tree Study Using Digital Watercolour Techniques

My study for Trees using various digital watercolour and watercolour brushes

I used a combination of digital watercolour brushes, watercolour brushes, blender brushes, glow brushes, and distortion brushes in this experimental tree study. Skip Allen's new Eastern water brushes and John Derry's Watercolour brushes are the only ones I used that are not among the Painter 11 default brushes categories. The others were brushes I made alterations to in order to make the kind of mark I wanted. I am still trying to get a more traditional, loose, wet, watercolour look, so I resisted trying to put in too much detail.

I will continue to work on these techniques and use of these different brushes and will try to do some short tutorials and demonstrations in the near future.

 A few tips for now:
  • to drop your layers to use the Blender - Just Add Water
  • use the Distortion - Course Distorto brush to move the paint around to achieve a more random and loose look.
  • Lift entire canvas to the watercolour layer now and then so you can use the wet brushes on top of areas that dried when you dropped
  • angle and squeeze of strokes makes a big difference. Be prepared to change angle often.
