Tip for Blending Digital Watercolours Just Like the 'Real Thing'!

Techniques for Blending Digital Watercolours - Use the Captured Dabs Unsaturated With Preserve Transparency On

 A TIP from Joan A Hamilton's Digital Sketchbook :
  • Use a Captured Dabs Based Brush Unsaturated With Preserve Transparency On in the Layers Palette
  •  There are a number of Captured Splat/Dab type dabs available in Painter 12 brush libraries and in Skip Allen's Watercolour Brushes.
  • There are quite a few great sets available on Skip's Website - I highly recommend downloading them for your use because they add sooo much to your possibilities!
  • I honestly don't think I could paint watercolours digitally if I had to confine myself to Painter brushes. (This actually one of the best tips I could give you!)
Below is an example of what the blending would look like Using the Captured Dabs Unsaturated With Preserve Transparency OFF

Check the Preserve Transparency Box and your blend will be smoother and it won't seem to be removing colour by picking up white pixels from the Underlying Layer.

  • what I really wanted to get across was that using a Captured Dab shape such as the one in the Real Watercolour category Unsaturated can give you a much more realistic looking wet blend than the Default Painter Digital Watercolour Blenders can. Below is the same paint strokes blended with the New Simple Blender brush at it's default settings.
