The Corel Painter 12 has stopped working message is becoming far too familiar

Since I installed it I have had significantly less crashes. If you are having problems I recommend you install it.

This message is becoming far too familiar. Today Corel Painter 12 crashed on me 6 times, at a point that was very inconvenient and annoying. I lost work I didn't want to lose every time. I was saving frequently and being careful about not having too much open at once.

I don't understand why there hasn't been some kind of patch by now. It's about three months since it was released. Surely they have come up with some fixes by now.

Anyway folks, that's why I'm not blogging much and posting new work. I'm wasting time recovering from crashes! At least in Painter 11 you sometimes had the option of saving the file in a Recovery Folder before shutting you down.

As soon as the screen fades my heart sinks. "Oh no not again! *%#*!!!

  • How are you coping with Painter 12's 'Frequent Crashing Program'?

  • Have you discovered anything that really helps?

  • I would love to hear about your experiences!

I'm sorry to hear of your Painter 12 frustrations, Joan. It is no fun to lose work as invariably it is impossible to exactly recreate the original lost brush strokes. I was and still am hoping for incremental bug fixes in Painter 12, which are frequently made available for some of the other software applications I have.

I have the crashes too :( and at times I get horrible brush lag even with something as simple as a 2B pencil. At those times I can open task manager and right click on Painter 12 and select affinity, disable half of my computers cores and the brush lag disappears. On my computer I leave the first core enabled and then disable every other one down the list. Sadly this doesn't seem to do anything at all for the crashes, I save often, I have an iterative save icon on a custom palette along with the other commands I use most often.
I do ok until the second or third crash and then I simply quit for the day.

The really bad news, when Painter 11 was released in February 2009 it was also very very buggy, the first hot fix that only addressed a very few issues wasn't released until May, and the service pack that fixed many of the most serious issues wasn't released until January 6 2010. That was almost a year after the initial release.

I certainly hope the crashing issue is addressed in the first hot fix and that it comes soon, but Painter has had a long history of crash issues so I wouldn't hold my breath :(

Honestly if it wasn't for the amazing watercolor brushes I'm not sure I would bother with it, but they are sooooo good that I put up with things I wouldn't in any other program.
