Part Two Winter Birches Digital Watercolour Demonstration in Progress

Part Two:
  • the first thing I did was resize my document to 15.25 x 11.5 in.  100 ppi to make it fit a standard sized mat.
  •  then I made a Quick Clone of it using the Quick Clone function in the File menu
  • Note the Clone Source Panel and controls are open. It can be accessed from the Windows menu as well.
  • I can turn it on and off and increase and decrease it's opacity depending on how much of it I want to see. Remember it's only a value guide.
  •  Using My Custom Grainy Soft Wash in a very pale greyish lavender I painted the sky area
  • With the same brush and a paler blue I painted all the snow area

  •  I did this very pale blue wash on all the snow to tone down the whites and add sparkle
  • I also copied and pasted my original sketch back in as a layer from the Value Study

  • Fine Tip Digital Watercolour to “suggest some trees.”

  •  Soften some of the  edges on the dark DWC trees with DWC Note the softening was done with very little Diffusion On only on one side of the branches.
  • They stand out a lot right now, but I will probably darken the tree area more.
  • On a new Gel Layer with PUC clicked paint a pale blue wash (I used Derry's Gel wash squeezed)
  •  On same layer with PT on and PUC off paint some tree shapes in blue with touches of pink with a Captured Fractal dab (from Real Watercolours) with the Method changed to a digital watercolour brush
  • This is what it looks like with the WC layer turned off

  • The digital watercolours look too opaque and bright on their own, but very different on top of the watercolour layers

  • Opacity reduced on some layers to balance things out
  • All the layers were dropped and dried.
  • Canvas lifted to WC layer
  • Wet Entire Canvas with brush settings for Wet WC Layer Light at the illustrated Water Settings

This next illustration is a version that I was playing with some ways to make snowflakes. More on that later in the process...

Joan,
You have a real talent in making everything look so easy. I wonder if I will ever reach that star.
Thank you,

Hi Kathleen

Thanks for visiting and for your very nice compliment. A lot of what I’m doing isn’t really hard, but it does take many hours of practice
and experimentation to develop your own style. I always hope I can give people a starting off point that is a little further on in the continuum
than I began to try to paint watercolours digitally.
Glad to see you taking HOS! Karen, Skip and Elaina are wonderful teachers! See you there!

Happy Painting,

Joan
