Paintings by Students Who Took My Course

I have been busy writing and teaching my course Learning to Paint Elements in the Watercolour Landscape with Corel Painter 12 at Digital Art Academy for the last few months and haven't been blogging or painting much myself.

Thought it would be nice to share some of the beautiful work submitted by two of my students, with their kind permission of course.

Both of these students obviously have some prior art experience, but had not ventured into using the watercolour variants much before.

This one is by Charlene Hughes who has only been using Corel Painter since last June. She is a talented artist who has been painting traditionally for years (I believe) and her work shows it. I love the delicate touch Charlene brings to her paintings. It is a good example of how an artist who has skills in a traditional media can transfer them to painting digitally. Aren't you amazed at how much this has the appearance of a traditionally painted watercolour? I am! She has really taken the techniques and brushes I've given her in my course and created some excellent work! I look forward to seeing more of Charlene's work.

Kathy Pilgrim has been painting digitally for many years and is accomplished in using other painting programs such as Photoshop as well. I have always admired and enjoyed Kathy's work which I have followed on the Painter Talk Forum. She is a very talented artist who is not afraid to experiment with her medium. Her art has a style that comes across no matter her subject or chosen meduim. I very much admire the loose painterly quality of her work. Her colours and understanding of value, shapes and composition make her a 'natural' for watercolour!

I have had some wonderful feedback from my students in this course and it has been an enjoyable experience to see students apply the techniques I've taught them to progress in their 'creative journey.' Most of the students were not at Kathy and Charlene's level of experience, but I saw tremendous growth and some wonderful experimentaion going on in the work they posted.

I was a little disappointed at the number of students who didn't participate and post their results, but as long as they felt they learned something and weren't having problems I could have helped them with ...well I can't complain. Maybe they will next time!

I learned a lot from my first teaching experience and see different ways I can improve and revise for future courses.  One of the most humbling things I learned was that what seems obvious and easy to me, is not so, for people just beginning to learn to use the watercolour variants in Corel Painter. I can see the gaps in my teaching better now and won't take for granted that my students will already know something about using Corel Painter, especially when it comes to the watercolours.

If anything, though, I am feeling more committed to learning to use the wonderful, exciting tools Corel Painter 12 has given us to paint watercolours digitally. In the last seven years I have seen a big surge towards this kind of digital painting and a huge improvement in the capabilities of the program to make it all possible.
