Painter 12 Digital Watercolor Study of Work by Canadian Watercolorist Marney Ward

Study Using Real Watercolour Brushes in Corel Painter 12

I picked this painting Out of the Blue by Canadian artist Marney Ward to do a Study using only the Real Watercolours  to see how close I could get to traditional watercolour with these new brushes. I didn't use the pause diffusion brush control too much, but did use it on the lighter blue petal areas. I don't know if she used salt in areas, but it looked like she might have. There were lots uses for the new brushes in this painting and I'm sure with practice I can incorporate some of these techniques into my own paintings.

Out of the Blue by Marney Ward

I really love her use of contrast and negative painting in this! Marney's use of textured areas and sparkle add much to the quality of the light in this painting. My results fell short in this area. Need to work on keeping the whites instead of trying to put them in afterwards using erasers, blenders. The Salt technique needs a way to vary the individual pieces of salt's reaction to the damp or wet paint. I have a feeling the new diffusing capabilities of the Real Watercolours will lead to some new Custom Brushes and Techniques in this area. Looks like Joan is really going to have to learn some new tricks...like Masking and Using Channels.

Marney Ward graciously gave me  her permission to use it as a teaching example only, and she said my mine was actually quite a good copy, but the colour was off a bit. She said the center and the bottom left had more orange, so I gave it a bit of an orange glaze. It looks quite blurry here, the larger file looks a lot better.

My thanks to Marney for letting me use her painting to learn how to paint watercolours digitally!
