My First Article Published in Digital Paint Magazine - True Colours

True Colours

My column may fit in a small niche, but I predict it will grow bigger...

My first article, which will be a monthly thing, has been published in Digital Paint Magazine.
The column is entitled "True Colours" and will feature tips and short tutorials about painting watercolours digitally. A small niche in a big market, but I think there are lots of people interested in the subject. Given the popularity of traditional watercolour, it stands to reason there would be a corresponding number of people interested in painting watercolours digitally too.

There seems to be a scarcity of instructional materials for digital watercolours

From my point of view, and I have been searching the internet high and low for years, there seems to be a lack of instructional material available on actually painting with the WC and DWC variants. When you consider how many books, websites, and other instructioanl material there is on painting traditional watercolours it's a little frustrating.

Learning to use the digital tools first, will give you the ability to learn from many resources

The good news is that once you learn to use the digital brushes and to control the marks you want to make, you can proceed with learning to paint using traditional medium resources.
For example, once you know how to paint certain kinds of washes digitally you will be able to relate that knowledge to learning to paint in many watercolours styles.

I hope to help fill the gap betwixt and between painting digitally and painting traditionally in a watercolour style

There are many digital artists out there who would love to try painting in a watercolour style primarily using the DWC and WC brushes, but find them a bit daunting. The interesting thing is that many of you have painted watercolours traditionally before turning to the digital tools for various reasons. I actually have done very little with 'real' WC. Sometimes I think that is why it is easier for me to do it digitally. I'm trying to produce the mark, not reproduce the same physicality of a wet brush, paint and paper. (Although lately I've felt like my Intuos pen might drip at times! lol!)

This is also why I am in the process of writing an Ebook on the subject How To Paint Watercolours Digitally. I originally hoped to have it done before Christmas, but have since learned it's going to take a lot longer, if it is going to be worth doing at all.

Who knows?  Maybe there are even some diehard traditionalists out there that would secretly like to try digital painting! :)

So there you go, my reason for contributing to Digital Paint Magazine ...I wanna make some converts! lol!

You're doing such great work. I know that once you you get the eBook completed, that we'll have a great teacher. I loved to paint really wet watercolors. Most of my paintings were more abstract, using flower forms as my shapes. Will you be able to teach me how to do what I loved, which was to puddle water, drop in color and tip the paper to move the paint. All of the above is what I'd love to do with DWC. I have moved from traditional mediums to digital mediums but I've never used DWC.

I'm a huge fan and love that you are so willing to share what you know. Thanks for all of your efforts and hard work to keep us informed.

Marcia and Jackie...your wonderful comments give me the boost I need to keep going with this project. Thank you so much! :)

The funny thing is I have found that I can't just work on tutorials because I forget how to paint. Well not exactly, but seems I have to be doing it and exploring it to be able to write about it. So, the whole process is going to take longer than I expected! I'm working on wet into wet techniques, but we may have to give up the idea of really really wet until Corel invents some new processes! I'll keep trying though, because I want that look as well!

Thanks again for your support!

Joan I look forward to reading more of your articles in DPM. My background is in traditional art mediums, pretty much everything from graphite/charcoal to oil paints but excluding watercolours. I've given them a wide berth when painting digitally as well, but I am starting to get the desire to give them a try. They might in fact be my next big digital challenge - and purely due to being inspired by your work!
