Morning Mist a digital Watercolour in ProgressA Beginner's Tip used a different way... Quick Clone your Value Study
Morning Mist a digital Watercolour in Progress
Morning Mist Value Study No. 1
I've been reading and trying to absorb some basic painting lessons on value, design and composition leaving colour out of the equation for now. I did this painting for a value study for a digital watercolour. Breaking down the painting into a series of tonal areas and shapes makes it almost look like a Chinese painting in tone, but not in brushwork.
I have usually left this part of a painting in my painting as a locked layer to guide me, but this time I'm going to use the Value Study as my clone source for the real painting. To do this:
it is not part of your new document and you can turn it on and off and change the opacity if you like. Then your value study or sketch is there for you to see as a guide when you need it. You cannot accidentally drop it into your new painting this way either!

I really love this Joan. Wonderful composition. I particularly like this technique using your value study. Can't wait to see finished piece.
