More Tips on Painting Snow - Adding Shadows and Dimension

The above link is to a previous post on painting snow in watercolour. Skip Allen left a comment on it it today and reminded me of a great brush in his Real Watercolours 2 Brush set (these came out before Painter and are not the same as Real Watercolours, they use the Wet Abrasive (Subcategory) of  Wet (Method), Loaded Water. This is a great set for snow painting! It can be found on Skip Allen Paints

How to Add Shadows and Dimension to your Snow

  •  Loaded Water brush as is can remove paint quite a bit and run a little giving a nice soft edge
  • the two examples below are from the brush as is and from my modified brush, which I renamed White Rem Diff

  • The illustration below shows how adding some pale violet with the White Rem Diff brush (the colour is changed from white to pale lavender. This is not a Wet Remove Density (Subcategory) brush, so the colour matters here.
  • I also used the White Rem Diff (white) to further soften the violet. I am using very light tapping strokes.
  • I had to back in and diffuse some of the browner DWC shadows a little more.

  •  I may give the the snow a very pale pink wet glaze with a Soft Water Blush because snow is hardly ever perfectly white due to all kinds of refracted light happening. You don't want the white of the snow to jump out at you, keep the values that make sense to your eye.
  • Also would need to add a few more falling snowflakes because they are technically in front of the snow on the rocks and should show against the darker shadows in the mounded show
  • If you Zoom + in your browser screen you can see this better in close up detail.

Hope these tips help you in your snow paintings!

Happy Painting,
Joan
