My Art Blog

Maybe losing all my custom brushes in Corel Painter 11 is not such a bad thing or my new Lean Mean Painting Machine!

Thanks to those who emailed me with advice to help solve my problem with Painter 11... And super big thanks to Skip Allen for patiently helping me fix things in a GoToMeeting Session !

My biggest learning from this experience is that everyone who uses Painter, and that includes artists who have trouble with technology and are trying to ignore this part. (I've admitted that was my biggest mistake!) Seems there is more to digital painting than learning how to paint. Understanding Brush Libraries, and Workspaces is pretty essential.

Skip Allen has writtten a very good article explaining the basics of Brush Libraries Corel Painter Watercolour Brushes in a blog post of April 2010 Digital Paint Magazine Blog.

Having reinstalled Painter 11 and reloaded all  Skips watercolour and digital  watercolour brushes ... feel like I have a new lean, mean, painting machine! I still need to reload John Derry's Watercolour set. I did manage to reload my Apple Set, which has some of my custom DWC in it.

Restoring my custom brushes and workspaces doesn't seem quite as critical. I am finding that because I have learned so much more about brush controls in the past year, I can recreate similar variants fairly quickly.

It is invaluable for me to understand how varying different brush controls affects my brush. It is comparable to a traditional watercolourist making a brushstroke. They know how much paint, how much water, what size of brush, how wet is the paper etc.

Many variables come in to play with each and every brushstroke. In digital painting control of these variables (at least to some extent! eh!) gives YOU the control of your brush.

The above links to tutorials will give you and understanding of the basics. From there on the possibilities seem infinite...discover YOUR OWN POSSIBILITIES by learning what each control does.

You can be sure this time that I will save new brushes and organize them properly, thanks to Skip's helping me learn how to.

Aren't Skip's brushes amazing! I think he has pretty much got us covered for whatever kind of watercolour brushstroke we could ever want to make!
Now we just have to figure out when to use which brush (or brushes as is usually the case) to get what look!

You're very welcome! I'm glad you are using them!
Cheers,
Joan
