Marnie's Purple Jug - a digital painting of a glass purple jug
This is my second or third attempt at painting glass and fabric. I had a really hard time with the folds in the cloth and the handle of the jug. Ah! The beauty of digital painting is that I can erase it all and start over as many times as I want to. (Which is not the same as "need to"!) My terrific sister-in-law Marnie gave me this jug recently when I asked if I could borrow it to paint it. I hope she likes the resulting painting because she's getting it as a gift! I saw different contrast possibilities in the composition of this still life. Between organic and inorganic, in the apple and the jug which are both shiny reflective surfaces against the soft folds of the fabric. The crisp edges in the cloth the sharp outline of the jug and the apples contrast with the more fluid lines within the objects shapes. The high contrast between the whiteness of the cloth and the deep rich colours in the apple and jug make the jewel like colours glow. The differences in texture between the three elements was another contrast I wanted to make, so each thing had to be captured in a believable way. To achieve this I found that the edges in each object had to be consistent with the texture of it's surface. ie: The hard smooth surface of the jug needed hard sharp lines and contrasts in colour. All of the colours in this painting are cool ones (to me) and maybe I need to get some warmer colour in it. There are some gold and pink highlights in the apples and more on the grey wall which made the violet and green, but not enough to really warm anything up much! The side facing the light is warmer in tones than the other. I added a slight amount of French Watercolour paper texture at the end and it seemed to make some of the detail in the fabric disappear. I think when I reduced the dye concentration before printing it on the Aurora Fine Art paper more was lost. It's difficult to retain that and I will probably have to darken parts to keep more the folds visible. This is a pretty small resolution for web version as well. Let me know what you think!
