How To Use The Lasso Tool in Corel Painter 9.5

How To Use The Lasso Tool in Corel Painter 9.5 (first published 9/27/08 on my Wordpress blog)

This tutorial outlines the steps and shows screen captures of how to move selected areas of your painting to a different spot in the painting.

Using the Lasso Tool can save you a lot of time and effort. Instead of painting this all over again, I can move the leaves around and try out different compositions.

Steps

1. From the Tool Box select the Lasso Tool. Draw an area around the area you wish to select. In this case, I  want to move this leaf around. Once I have selected it with the Lasso Tool a broken line appears around the selection.

2. From the Edit Menu chose Edit Copy to copy the selection you have lassoed. I do this because it is easier to deal with it. It will automatically be pasted on a new layer when you chose Paste in Place.

3. Then return to your Canvas Layer, reselect the selection by choosing Selection from the main menu then Reselect in the drop down menu. Once you have the original selection reselected on the Canvas layer you can go to the Edit Menu again and choose Cut in the drop down menu.

4. At this point you should have the Canvas Layer without the leaf in question and a new Layer with the leaf in question on it. Go to this layer and using the Selection Tool Arrow from the Toolbox as shown above, move, resize, and rotate the leaf by grabbing it by the selection handles.

5. This diagram illustrates the fact that all three of the larger leaves are now on their own layer. This was done by following the steps as outlined so far in the post. Be careful you don't Drop any of these layers yet, or they will stay where they are as depicted here. (You could always move them around by going through the whole process again...) There are other ways to accomplish this little bit of editing, such as erasing and repainting the leaves from scratch, but there are times that you won't want to do that.

Please forgive me for the delays in finishing this post. I will fill in some details and try and tidy it up a bit. This  is  the first time I've blogged or used SnagIt and I guess I got a little carried away. I'm sure I will get better at it...in the meantime if you have any comments or questions you know what to do with them. :)
