General Tips and Techniques – Blending the Digital Watercolour Variants

On a new Gel Layer using the Pure Water brush paint the first layer on

the apples. I clicked the Pick Up Underlying Colour box because I can

now blend the paint with the Preserve Transparency Box checked using

my Custom Digital Watercolour Blender.

In this case there is no colour to pick up underneath, so I’m not sure if checking the box here matters. It was just a habit I had then.

You might want to practice a bit first. Paint with Pick Up Underlying

Colour box checked. Then unclick it and click the Preserve Transparency

Box instead. Use the DWC blender and you’ll see it spreads the paint

around in a nice wet manner. If you do it without changing this, it will

remove paint, which in some cases is okay, but not here!

These are the basic brush settings for my Custom Digital Watercolour Blender. It is from my Apple Set.

The Custom Digital Watercolour Blender can be altered by adding diffusion, reducing opacity, squeezing the angle. Try different things to see what blends best for the spot you are working on. Remember to use this as an unsaturated brush, or it will add colour.

Sometimes resaturating your blending brush with a little of the colour that you want the blended area to be helps it along.

Uncheck the Preserve Transparency box and you will be able to blend these strokes further than your original strokes. This is a good point to add 1% diffusion to the blending brush so the edges are blended softly.
