Digital Watercolour Skies - some new techniquesCopyright Joan A Hamilton Sept. 2009 Please do not copy without permission. Digital Painting Techniques for Watercolour Skies
I painted this sky this morning to illustrate some techniques for painting skies in digital watercolour. I am really liking John Derry's Watercolour brushes because of the way I can get those nice jaggedy edges. I used various kinds of brushes to achieve this watercolour look.
It was all done with the following types of brushes:
Blenders to soften edges and blend colours in some areas
Distortion to diffuse and pull the paint around
Digital Watercolour to add colour in some places
Watercolour to do the runny grey cloudy area
Glow and Erasers to lighten the blue paint in some areas or put whites back in
JD's Gel Wash to lay in blue sky on a layer with Pick up Underlying colour then
Gel Blender used on top of Gel Wash area with Preserve Transparency
Gel Diffusion and Gel Soften were used randomly to vary the amount of paint in certain areas
I also varied the opacity of some layers before dropping them ie: lightened them.
Very little Brightness and Contrast and a little Sharpen to make the web jpeg a little clearer.
Is that clear? Or is still a little 'cloudy' for you!
Happy Painting!
Joan Later that day... I like this sky so I want to paint a picture around it. It reminds me of one I have of a barn, so I think I will paint my first barn!!
I will continue this demonstration in further posts (mostly because the title doesn't mention barns!)
