Day 2 of Purple and White Iris - digital watercolour in progress

I deleted the background I ended up with yesterday. It was easy to do because I had not dropped the layers and it was simply a matter of choosing Delete layer in the Layers Palette. You can undo it immediately if you picked the wrong one by being on a different layer than you think you are!(Hit Crtl Z).

  • To do the background, I did a bit of a sketch using a wet fine tip brush on a wc (Gel )layer.
  • then I protected my flower by using the Lasso Tool to select it and choosing Paint outside the selection.
  • I used Skip Allen's fringegradient digital watercolour brush with a gradient I had made (a greenish blue one) to paint the background part of the background, leaving the leaf areas white

  • then I painted inside the leaf areas with a green brush (from Hue) Skip Allen's fringegradient digital watercolour brush

Then using the Effects menu I brightened the light very slightly and made the darks darker with the increased contrast. I could have done this by doing more digital wc glazes, but this gives me a uniform and good base. You have to dry the dig wc layer before you can use this Effect on it. It's not an effect to use too routinely because of this. You cannot treat that blue/green background like a digital watercolour any more.

Now I have to figure out what to do next on this painting...humm? Maybe it's time for a Sunday nap instead!

Next part in new post Day Three...

Hi Joan,

I love this painting. It is terrific seeing the progression. I use brightness and contrast on layers, too, but I do it a little differently. You might want to try it. Instead of using Effects > Tonal Control > Brightness/Contrast use Window > Underpainting and adjust the sliders for brightness and contrast on that palette. It works the same as the Brightness/Contrast effects, but you can see the result on the image and you do not have to look at the tiny preview window. The action doesn't take effect until you click the apply button. And if you do apply and you don't like it, then control z gets you right back out.

Both ways work equally well...I don't like the little preview windows...LOL.
