A dramatic Digital watercolour of A Lenten RoseLenten Rose original painting by Joan A Hamilton February 14, 2009Photo reference used with the kind permission of Teunis Haveman
This is admittedly a very dramatic flower. It is a bit over the top for me, but it was a good challenge. I need to figure out a better way to do the veins on the petals. I was going for a grainy look, but ended up with thicker than I wanted. I really like the way the light shines through the top petal. The overall shape of the flower is very graceful and expressive. These are the things that drew me to it in the first place. Since the flower was already very detailed and full of contrasts, I felt the background didn't need any more detail to compete with it. I have been meaning to try this kind of dark background with a floral for awhile . . . and I will probably try it again! There seems to be some shading missing on the stamen things. When I look at this a few days from now, I will see things I am completely misssing right now, because I have been looking so intently at it for so long. Wishing everyone a very Happy Valentine's Day! Perhaps the drama of this Lenten Rose is symbolic of the course of true passionate love, but it probably has some religious connotation I am unaware of, especially since it is an early spring flower.
