A Better Way to Blend Digital Watercolours in Corel Painter

A Better Way to Blend Digital Watercolours in Corel Painter

This is a really simple tip that I have mentioned before in various demonstrations, although I haven't specifically used the Digital Watercolour Variant Finer Mop Brush very much. In my never ending quest for an authentic watercolour look, the problem of Wet into Wet is somewhat possible with blending techniques.

To demonstrate this I have painted some lines with the New Simple Water brush  as shown in the first box. I then duplicated the layer twice to have the same thing to blend each time.

Set The Saturation Level to 0% in the Well Control Panel

In the second box I gently blended the colours together using the Digital Watercolour Variant Finer Mop Brush on it's default setting, with only the Saturation level set to 0% in the Well Brush Control Panel. This means you will not be applying any more paint, but rather blending what is already there. The illustration below shows the only change I made to the brush.

The third box was blended with the same brush set a larger size. It's helpful if you use a gentle kind of tapping motion rather than longer strokes. Experiment with it. You will get a feel for it pretty quickly and see that you can move the paint around.

I find it works much better than any of the default Digital Watercolour Blending Brushes ie: New Simple Blender, Flat Water Blender, Round Water Blender and Soft Round Blender. If you lower the Bleed level and desaturate some of these they work better, but I find the Static Bristle in the Finer Mop Brush tends to give it a smoother more diffused blend.

All in all you will find this a useful tip and can try out some of the other DWC brushes desaturated as blenders too!
